Annual midterm exams at Foran High School start in January, and it is never too early to start studying for them.
The first half of the school year is about to end, and students will have to face a series of tests that encompass the entire semester. It is best that students don’t go into these exams unprepared and should study in advance. However, students should make sure not to stress out during this time period.
“Without mental and physical health, students will always be behind the eight ball,” says Jakob Rosengrant, the director of the school’s counseling department.
Rosengrant encourages students to maintain their health, both mentally and physically. This can be accomplished by engaging in physical activity regularly, maintaining a proper sleep schedule, and properly eating and drinking.
From there on, students should manage their stress by setting realistic goals, managing their time wisely, and using study techniques that have worked well for them in preparation for midterms.
“The best resource available to our students is our incredible group of teachers!” exclaims Rosengrant.
The teachers at Foran put in great effort to make sure their students learn and understand the curriculum of their subject. They know how a student should approach a challenge like midterms to succeed.
“Staying on top of their coursework and completing all their work on time is the best way to set the foundation for a successful midterm,” asserts Ms. Emily DiCapua, a teacher in the math department.
Due to the differences in each core subject, there are different ways teachers can help their students be successful in their exams. For DiCapua, she gives out review packets for her students to complete, letting them solve the problems on their own. If they are struggling with any question, she also provides an answer key with laid-out solutions to each question on a packet.
Furthermore, students can seek further assistance from the Literacy and Numeracy Centers in the building. These support centers are staffed by a teacher every period, and they are ready to answer any questions students may have.
Dicapua claims, “Numeracy Center is a very helpful resource during the school day to help you prepare, as well as trying to schedule after-school help with your teacher.”
Even beyond these two main resources, there are other ways to receive support for midterms, such as educational websites or tutoring that can come from an outside source or from other students. Staying organized is also a great way to make sure midterms go smoothly.
“One strategy I use for midterms is staying organized with Google Keep. I keep all my assignments, due dates, and study plans there, so I always know what I need to accomplish and when,” proclaims senior Thao Pham, president of the class of 2026.
With preparation, communication, and self-care, every student has the opportunity to finish the semester strong and showcase what they’ve learned.
