Whether it’s painting on a canvas or designing a digital piece on a computer, Foran offers a wide variety of art classes for students to take.
Art for Seniors
Art for seniors is a full-year class that allows them to work on either 2D or 3D projects. Students start by making a drawing utilizing colored pencils.
Senior Sean Fitzgerald is a student in Art for Seniors. Fitzgerald enjoys many parts of the class.
“I liked the cartoon project we did at the beginning of the year,” Fitzgerald states.
The first project that they worked on was a cartoon project, which involved students drawing a cartoon character by tracing out their cartoon character and drawing the lines of the cartoon character. They would then take another paper and draw the final draft.
Students then began to work on “line art.” Line art is an art form that focuses on creating pictures and visuals using lines.
Ms. Deanna Dotson is the art teacher of art for seniors. “When you are specifically using drawing techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, that is referred to as line art,” Dotson states. Line art isn’t just art that uses lines; it involves more complex techniques to achieve its unique style.
Digital Media and Design
Digital Media and Design is a half-year course where students work on computers to create different works of art.
This year, the class is seeing a change in its core structure. The teacher of the course, Ms. Meghan Hudson, decided to make a change to how she approaches the class this year.
“I’m trying to teach it this year as a blend of looking at making good choices for graphic design, color, impact of color, and marketing graphic design,” Hudson says.
Digital media and design also have a lot of real-world applications for business owners and entrepreneurs.
“A lot of graphic design is towards marketing. How are you marketing your product so it could be beneficial for someone going into business, someone who’s looking at doing their own entrepreneurship, so you don’t have money to hire a graphic designer?” Hudson remarks.
Digital media and design can also lead to a well-paying career. Graphic designers remain among the highest-demand creative design jobs on the market.
“A lot of different career paths, everything from business to people who are interested in illustration or people who are interested in newspaper and journalism, creating stories,” Hudson explains.
Ceramics and Pottery
Ceramics and Pottery are divided into two classes: Ceramics & Pottery 1 and Ceramics & Pottery 2. In Ceramics & Pottery, one student will work with clay to create and design 3D sculptures. The sculptures aren’t just for show.
“Students work with clay to create not just visual but functional pieces. There is a bit of engineering that is involved with it,” Hudson remarks.
Creating a piece that is visually appealing and sturdy is a good challenge and one of the core principles of the class.
In pottery two, students will work to reinforce what they have already learned in pottery one. They will also learn new techniques and work to create more complex sculptures.
Foran’s diverse selection of art classes for students to take presents opportunities not just in school work but out of school as well.
