Winter sports have been successful in the past couple of years, with wrestling winning the state championship, boys basketball tying its best season ever with a record of 19-6, and other teams looking to continue that momentum.
The boys’ basketball success led them to move from Division III to Division II in their conference, making this year harder than ever.
Coach Ian Kirkpatrick says, “I think we’ll show steady growth as the season progresses. We have two returning starters and will be looking for other players to step up and contribute in key roles.”
Their new challenging schedule includes West Haven. The Devils have been a recent fan favorite, as they are big contenders.
Girls’ basketball finished last season 13-10. Returning player Maddie Deldin averaged 7.6 points, 2.1 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game last season. A big opponent in this upcoming season is the North Haven Nighthawks; last season, they finished 12-6.
Wrestling has also been victorious, with Captain Zach Lund contributing to the team’s success last year and now committed to wrestling at Springfield College in Massachusetts. In addition to regular meets, the team is competing in Trumbull Duals, where they wrestle a few rivals, including Berlin and Trumbull.
Indoor track has lost a couple of seniors, but it has been prepping continuously. Overall, states are a huge meet for anyone who qualifies, but returning Senior Justin Rodriguez says SCC’s is the biggest meet for him.
Boys hockey also had an unbelievable season last year, finishing 13-6-1, a huge leap from the prior season’s 4-15-1. Captains Matthew Adkins, Joey Kerzner, and Parker Guarnieri plan to bring success. The New Milford Green Wave is a tough opponent, finishing 11-12-1 last year.
Adkins states, “I think the team will have great chemistry and do great because of how close we all are.”

Girls’ hockey finished 14-5 and won its last four games. Players are preparing for their upcoming season opener against Suffield on December 13. Some notable players are Lexy Patel and Ava Martin.
For boys swimming, Senior Captain Joe Lahav is coming back with big intentions, aiming to guide his team to success starting Thursday, December 4.
Gymnastics has been great the past few years with overall and individual success. Senior Kayla Johnson made All-SCC last year.
Cheer’s season will include two major competitions: the SCC competition on Feb. 7 and the state competition on March 7.
Captain Laney Chan says, “I think we have the best chance to do well in competitions this season compared to the other years I’ve been on the team.”
